Margo The Writer

You can take the girl out of the north, but you can’t take the north out of the girl. Who would want to? Margo Bates was born and raised in British Columbia’s Pacific Northwest. She lived there until she was in her late twenties. She has a quick wit and an unusual turn of phrase that captures the distinct voice of the north.

Margo is an experienced public speaker. Interviewers say she’s entertaining, engaging, and easy to talk to — a natural. As a publicist for more years than she wants to count, Margo understands the media’s needs and can keep the chat going. She also knows when to let the story tell itself.

She got her start as a public speaker in grade six. When narrating her school's Christmas Pageant she threw some humor into the script. Widely recognized as her first review, the principal said, "Margo is destined for something ... probably a detention." She's continued as a keynote speaker, emcee, and host of public and private events. In her work as an author, Margo gives presentations at writers' gatherings, conferences, and events. She conducts workshops in fiction and humor writing, research techniques for fiction and non-fiction writing, publicity and social media marketing for writers.

Besides writing, she enjoys gourmet cooking, photography, and travel.

Follow her on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. P.S. Don’t Tell Your Mother is available in paperback, e-book and audio book format, which was narrated by Margo. Her second book in the P.S. series, The Queen of a Gated Community is at the editing stage. She's currently working on her third novel, The Funeral Follower. A compilation of family memories, recipes and anecdotes are in her first cookbook, Good Cookin' at Marge's Diner ... hundreds served! Originally published as a gift for family and friends, she's working on a revised edition, Marge's Diner Cookbook of Darn Fine Food.

Margo is a professional member of the Canadian Authors Association and is Past President of the Metro Vancouver branch. She is a member of the Rainwriters writing group, Federation of BC Writers, RCLAS - Royal City Literary Arts Society and is an alumna of the Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop, University of Dayton, Ohio.

She lives with her husband in a seaside town near Vancouver, Canada.
